James Rowland, 35, of HMP Holme House, appeared before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on July 29.
He admitted possessing garden cutters, a wheel wrench and a pair of gloves on July 2, while not at his place of abode.
The court heard the items were intended for use in the course of or in connection with burglary, an offence under a section of the Theft Act 1968.
Rowland was given a seven-month sentence, with four months to be served in custody and the remainder suspended for 18 months, consecutive to another offence.
Magistrates said the custodial sentence was justified due to Rowland’s previous offending and because the offence was committed on licence.
