Darlington Borough Council said households do not need to buy biodegradable liners once they have used the free supply provided with their food waste caddies. Newspaper can also be used, although the council advised that outdoor food waste bins may need cleaning more regularly to prevent smells. The reminder comes after the council said some households had told the authority they were not making regular use of the borough's weekly food waste collection service because they generated only small amounts of food waste. Collected food waste is processed to produce renewable energy that powers homes and businesses, as well as fuel and fertiliser for farms. The borough-wide weekly food waste collection service was introduced in June after every household received a food waste bin, kitchen caddy and recycling bags.
