The Shetland Times and Inverness Courier launched a joint Save Our Flights campaign urging Loganair, Transport Scotland, the Scottish government and Hial to find a solution.
Maree Todd, SNP regional MSP for the Highlands and Islands, said the funding was “extremely welcome news”.
Scottish transport committee convener Willie Rennie said the investment would be a “positive outcome for the island communities who made powerful and compelling representations” to the committee.
