Green Day reflect on early beginnings: “We were not about politics at all”Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has looked back on the evolution of the pop-punk maestros’ career, recalling that in the early days they were never really a “political” group. In a new interview, the vocalist cast his mind back to the time Green Day released their 1994 album Dookie, which remains their best-selling project to date. “We were not about politics at all – even though we came from an outspoken scene,” Armstrong recalled of their early career to the LA Times. Armstrong has taken this sentiment with him throughout the band’s career, striking first with “heart” before any over-insistence on “politics”. He clarified that Green Day are “definitely outspoken, but the songs are very personal and documenting where you’re at in that particular time in your life.”
