Greg Mendez recalls being “robbed at gunpoint” during terrifying near-death experienceFolk musician Greg Mendez has triumphed over substance abuse, childhood trauma, homelessness, and being robbed at gunpoint. Mendez chose to look back at a dark time in his life, when he was unemployed and “actively using drugs”, with “no place to stay”. Mendez recalled the monotony of “sweeping up dirt off the warehouse floor” before putting all his energy into a toilet renovation after four days of relentless scrubbing. However, rather matter-of-factly, Mendez confessed that that night he was “robbed at gunpoint”, though he didn’t offer the thief the full $400. The singer-songwriter laughed, “I was willing to gamble my life over about $200 because I didn’t really see much of a way forward in general.”
