Malta’s first official marine park has taken a major step forward, with the launch of the Ċirkewwa Marine Park Management Plan, turning the protected area from a legal designation into an actively managed marine reserve. The new framework sets out how the park will be protected in the years ahead, identifying the marine habitats and species that need safeguarding, the pressures affecting the area, and the measures required to preserve one of Malta’s most popular diving and recreational sites. Launched by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) together with several government entities, the plan includes proposals for clearer zoning of marine activities, improved mooring systems to reduce anchor damage, stronger monitoring and enforcement, enhanced diver safety, scientific research and educational initiatives.
