For many across Louisiana, the sentence handed down to former DeRidder Mayor Misty Roberts sparked outrage.
The Beauregard Parish District Attorney's Office has successfully requested a hearing to reconsider Roberts' sentence after widespread criticism and new questions surrounding how that sentence was determined.
Judge Savoie granted the request, and Roberts is now scheduled to return to court on August 31, where prosecutors will argue that her original sentence was too lenient.
The motion follows months of public criticism after many viewed Roberts' punishment as little more than a "slap on the wrist."
While judges rarely revisit sentences after they have been imposed, Louisiana law allows a court to reconsider a sentence under certain circumstances.
