Abdul El-Sayed, former Wayne County health director, won the Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate primary Wednesday, Aug. 5, defeating U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham. With 99% of precincts reporting as of 9:54 a.m. on Aug. 5, El-Sayed earned 48.5% of the vote to Stevens’ 47.5%. “I know it was a bitter end to this very long primary,” El-Sayed said. “I want to congratulate Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate,” Stevens said. I am proud to offer my support as he takes on Mike Rogers in the general election.”
