On Monday, August 3rd the New York Racing Association (NYRA) and Churchill Downs Incorporated announced the formation of the “Thoroughbred Championship Series.” The Thoroughbred Championship Series aims to provide enticing storylines for fans; and a five-million-dollar prize pool to incentivize owners and trainers to participate. Notably the Preakness, the second Stake in the racing calendar for the Tripple Crown is excluded from the Thoroughbred Championship Series. This came less than a week before NYRA and Churchill Downs Inc. announced the formation of the Thoroughbred Championship Series. Time will tell if the Thoroughbred Championship Series establishes itself with the same prestige as the Tripple Crown, or if it will captivate a younger demographic.
