The Department of Conservation (DOC) says the discovery is an exciting breakthrough for everyone involved in restoring kiwi populations to the area, including Ngāti Rangi, Save the Kiwi, local volunteers and community conservation groups.
For Ngāti Rangi, the sighting represents the realisation of decades of work to restore kiwi to their ancestral lands.
Alongside the translocation programme, Ngāti Rangi members have also been trained and certified as kiwi handlers, strengthening iwi capability to care for and monitor the growing population.
The young kiwi sighted near Ohakune is one of a new generation benefiting from years of predator control, habitat restoration and community-led conservation efforts.
