For the 12 months ending in May, Evanston topped the national average for new housing permits issued. A new report by Visual Capitalist indicates that across America permits were issued to build 412 housing units for every 100,000 residents during that time period. Evanston’s building permit records indicate permits for 377 new dwelling units were issued here in that time. And the Evanston rate is more than three times the 157 new housing units per 100,000 residents permitted for Illinois as a whole. Almost all the new permits issued in Evanston were for multi-family rental apartment buildings.
