The council is committed to delivering 580 new council houses across Somerset by April 2030, with much of the provision being focused around towns and villages on or near the M5 corridor. The council has now signed a new deal which will see dozens of affordable rent homes for local people delivered on this site if planning permission is secured in the coming months. The funding to deliver these affordable homes was agreed within the council's housing revenue account budget in February, which is separate to its main revenue budget. Wendy Lewis, the council's housing specialist, said in her written report: "The addition of these council homes will increase the council's housing stock holding and contribute to the growth and regeneration of Cannington, bringing inward investment to the rural area. "This scheme brings new council homes to a part of the county that has been affected by the Hinkley Point C development, which has taken rented sector properties and increased rental prices.
