María Dimitrova won the individual kata gold medal on 5 August 2026 during her performance at the Combat Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center during the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games.Her husband, two-time Dominican Olympic gold winner Felix Sanchez was present with their three children to watch mom win in kata during the karate competition. He would say in an interview afterwards that he didn’t very much understand the nuances of her sport, but celebrated his wife calling her “a legend” in Dominican sports.Dimitrova had qualified for the gold medal match against Colombia’s Valentina Zapata, and went on to win 5-0 to claim her sixth consecutive Central American and Caribbean Games gold medal.
