One question has been whether GLP-1 medicines affect the risk of age-related macular degeneration, a common eye disease that can cause severe vision loss in older adults. Some suggested GLP-1 medicines might protect the eyes, while others hinted they could increase the risk of the disease. They compared first-time users of semaglutide with people starting other diabetes medicines, including dulaglutide, exenatide, empagliflozin, sitagliptin and glipizide. People taking semaglutide did not have a higher or lower risk of developing NVAMD than people taking the other diabetes medicines. The study cannot answer whether the same findings apply to people taking GLP-1 drugs mainly for weight loss.
