Rensselaer County defying NY law on ICE partnership programRENSSELAER COUNTY, N.Y. (WNYT) – Rensselaer County leaders say they will not follow a new state law blocking local cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
A meeting was held in Rensselaer County on Wednesday about the 287-g program, which creates a partnership between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement.
New York recently passed a law prohibiting local and state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities under the 287-g program.
Those NewsChannel 13 spoke to at the meeting voiced opposition to local law enforcement working with ICE.
The vice chair of the Rensselaer County Legislature said he believes people are outraged over an issue they are uninformed about.
