On this day in 1942, an 8-year-old Minot boy sold handmade ash trays and used the proceeds to buy war stamps.
Getting the idea for the trays from one he saw last year while on a trip to Joplin, Mo., young Lee made a few of them just for fun.
He had no thought of selling them until he received requests for them from family friends and acquaintances.
Since then he has sold about 80 and has purchased more than eight dollars worth of war stamps.
Lee has discovered that the best sellers are the trays decorated in patriotic colors, although his red and green trays are popular with students and faculty members at Minot State Teachers College.
