A 224,000-year-old skull fragment discovered in central Spain is offering new insight into the ancient human populations that lived in Europe during the Middle Pleistocene. The fragment was unearthed at the Ruidera Lakes Natural Park in the Castilla-La Mancha region during excavations at the Ruidera Middle Pleistocene locality. The study, published in the Journal of Human Evolution stated that the skull fragment displays considerable thickness and a pronounced angle along the temporal line, a ridge located on the side of the skull.
