Hunter08/06/26The University of Iowa College of Engineering is employing NASA satellite data and water-monitoring systems as they develop an early-warning system for nitrate levels in Iowa rivers and streams. The goal is to offer near-real time water quality monitoring updates, alerts and warnings in support of both community and private planning and decision making. Ui researchers will create and test a new AI model using NASA satellite imagery and ground-based data via the state’s water quality network of 60 real-time stations. Nitrate tracking is important because nitrate contamination in drinking water has been linked with serious health conditions including cancer and thyroid conditions. A 2026 Cancer in Iowa report found nitrate concentrations in private wells were higher than in public water supplies.
