The spray will help officers crack down on those using e-bikes, e-scooters and motorcycles used in crime or anti-social behaviour, reducing the need for risky pursuits or close confrontation. SmartTag is a traceable solution developed by DeterTech UK that can be fired from a handheld canister over distances of up to 10 metres, coating riders, clothing and bikes with an invisible marker. The spray is only detectable under ultraviolet light and has a unique forensic code linked to the specific canister used, which allows officers to match a suspect to a particular incident weeks or even months later. Thames Valley Police is using SmartTag already, and has seized more than 100 illegal machines in recent operations. Essex Police confirmed they are not due to start using SmartTag at this stage.
