Herefordshire Council’s cabinet has approved a new waste collection scheme, which will begin in September 2027, as part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling reforms. Every household in Herefordshire will be supplied with a kitchen caddy, an initial roll of compostable liners, and an outdoor food waste bin. "Recycling food waste separately will help us reduce the amount of waste in general rubbish bins, improve recycling rates, and make the most of the Government funding we’ve secured to introduce this new service," Coun Swinglehurst added. The food waste collections are mandated as part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling scheme, which came into effect nationwide on March 31, 2026. "It’s difficult to prevent all food waste, and so recycling one kitchen caddy of unavoidable food waste could power your fridge for 18 hours, and a whole truck would keep that fridge cool for five years."
