KAMPALA, Uganda – Ugandan footballer David Owori, captain of SC Villa and a former Uganda Cranes international, has died at the age of 27 after being attacked by suspected robbers near his home in Kampala.
Police said Owori was assaulted on Tuesday night after allegedly resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.
SC Villa, Uganda’s most successful football club, described Owori’s death as the loss of “a leader, brother and friend.”
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), teammates, supporters and political leaders have paid tribute to Owori, while Uganda’s Parliament observed a minute of silence in his honour.
His death, which comes weeks after rugby international Sydney Gongodyo was also killed in Kampala, has intensified public concern over violent crime in the Ugandan capital.
