Researchers are investigating how apoptosis – programmed cell death – can be modulated to treat cancer and other serious diseases. Now, veterinary researchers at Leipzig University have found that, in certain respects, bovine cells more closely resemble human cells than mouse cells do, suggesting they could serve as a valuable model for the development of new therapeutics. They found that, with regard to the key cell death proteins BAX and BAK, bovine cells more closely resemble human cells than the mouse cells that are commonly used in this field of research. On the one hand, the bovine BAX protein is more similar to its human counterpart than the mouse version.
