6 August 1514: Following the death of her husband James IV at the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513, Margaret Tudor, the sister of Henry VIII of England, married Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, at Kinnoull in Perthshire. The marriage ceremony was held in secret and angered other powerful Scottish noble houses who feared the growing influence of the House of Douglas. Amid growing civil unrest, a pregnant Margaret was forced to flee to England, where she gave birth to her daughter, Lady Margaret Douglas. Lady Douglas would marry Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox and their son, Lord Darnley, would marry Mary, Queen of Scots. Their son James would reign as King James VI and I.
