In July 2026, Sony announced the end of production for physical disc-based PlayStation games starting in 2028. Now, just a month later in August, PS5 boxes can be seen carrying a warning label signalling the end of physical disc support in January 2028. Despite halting the production of physical discs, the new PS5 boxes confirm that all discs released before January 2028 will be playable on the console. But one thing is clear – the warning on new PS5 boxes all but confirms that Sony won’t backtrack on their decision to kill disc-based PlayStation games. However, this raises the question of whether Sony’s next console, the PlayStation 6, rumored to release in fall 2027, will support physical discs released before January 2028 or not.
