The Federal Government has launched a far-reaching reform of the Almajiri education system with the approval of a new National Policy for the Enhancement of Almajiri Education aimed at ending street begging, improving learning standards and integrating pupils into Nigeria’s formal education framework. The policy, approved by the Federal Ministry of Education, prohibits Almajiri learning centres from sending pupils to beg on the streets or engage in menial jobs. The policy also establishes a structured certification process for graduates of recognised Almajiri learning centres through collaboration between the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education and relevant government agencies. Registered Almajiri schools will become eligible for government support, including learning materials, healthcare services, nutrition programmes, school feeding, scholarships for facilitators and, where possible, teacher allowances. Implementation will be coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, state and local governments, traditional rulers, parents, community leaders and development partners.
