That mountain was College Avenue — a notoriously steep hill on the south side of WSU’s campus. In rows of five late last week, the Cougars took turns running up it. There was a drive to win, to be the first one up the hill “like you’re playing recess in fifth grade,” WSU center Kyle Martin said. “It’s bringing us a point of adversity before the season starts because you’re gonna have adversity multiple times throughout the season.
