In a City of York Council Place Scrutiny Committee meeting on July 21, councillors, environment campaigners, and Yorkshire Water representatives met to discuss the condition of the city’s water infrastructure, including pollution in the river.
This follows criticism from campaigners about the state of the River Ouse earlier this year, including a protest over claims that the river was second most polluted in England.
Later in the meeting, Labour Cllr Danny Myers brought up the lack of public trust in the water industry and called on Yorkshire Water to explain what it would do to improve this.
In response, a Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “It’s really a challenge for the whole sector.
“We continue to work closely with the environment agency, local councils, environmental organisations and the agriculture sector across a broad range of pressures to try and improve river water quality.”
