The Shared Lives programme matches adults in need of care with trained carers who welcome them into their family home, either on a short-term or long-term basis. Tracy and Roger Beavan, from Burnley, have been involved in Lancashire County Council’s scheme for around 10 years, initially offering day support and respite care, before Karen moved in with them permanently. "When Karen’s previous Shared Lives carers were moving out of the area she was really upset, so my husband and I asked if she could live with us long term and she’s been here just over two years. Each arrangement is backed by a dedicated Shared Lives support officer from the county council. The couple continue to offer respite care through the scheme and are already booked up with four bookings for 2027.
