Musically, the Western fascination with India has everything to do with the spirit of musical adaptation, and the desire to incorporate. For live performances, such as those captured on this new Neptunian Maximalism album, the task ahead of them is almost unwieldy. If Éons is Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, aggressive and almost epic in its proportion; Nāgabhūtaṃ is more like Lawrence of Arabia. It’s more Boris with a touch of Sun Ra than Sun Ra with a touch of Boris. A live album – or rather, a truly great live album – is one which is equally as spontaneous as it is familiar.
