Hailed as the “bravest of the brave,” Skarbek was celebrated for her role in the fight against Nazi Germany.
Now we remember her courage and that of her fellow female spooks…‘James Bond in a skirt’Born into a wealthy Polish family in 1908, Krystyna Skarbek always had a taste for adventure.
When war broke out in 1939, she fled to London with second husband Jerzy Giżycki and signed up to the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).
Her last word was reportedly “Liberté.” A statue celebrating her bravery now stands in Gordon Square Gardens, central London.
