The classic 1985 movie that fired Rick Moranis: “They did shoot for a week or so”It says a lot about Rick Moranis that, despite not appearing in a live-action movie or TV show since 1997, he still remains a massively popular figure, both inside and outside of the industry. It wasn’t all sunshine and roses, though, and Moranis was all set to add another ’80s classic to his CV, until the writer and director decided a week or so into shooting that his performance wasn’t cutting it. The Breakfast Club featured plenty of actors who’d make it big, but after being given the boot, he wasn’t one of them. John Hughes hired him to play Shermer High School’s janitor in the coming-of-age classic, but for whatever reason, Moranis decided that he wanted the character to be an exaggerated Russian caricature. “They did shoot for a week or so, maybe less,” Kapelos, who didn’t play Carl Reed as an over-the-top Russian, recalled.
