Abdul El-Sayed, a physician and former public health official, narrowly won Michigan's Democratic primary for the US Senate this week, defeating Representative Haley Stevens in one of the most closely watched and expensive Senate primaries in the country this cycle.
The Associated Press called the race for El-Sayed on Wednesday morning, with him leading by roughly 1 percentage point after nearly all ballots were counted.
He will now face Republican former Congressman Mike Rogers in November in a contest that could help determine control of the Senate.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Stevens late in the race, a move widely seen as a last-minute attempt to slow El-Sayed's momentum.
Following his win, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters, both of whom had backed Stevens during the primary, voiced their support for El-Sayed heading into the general election.
