The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Thursday, August 6, stage its planned nationwide demonstration dubbed “Democracy Under Attack”, as the party raises concerns over what it describes as threats to Ghana’s democratic governance. The NPP has said the demonstration is intended to draw attention to issues including alleged restrictions on free expression, concerns over the treatment of opposition voices and what it describes as threats to democratic institutions. “There is always the temptation by people in power to suppress the voices and rights of the people. Power is like ice.... Live and let's live... that’s the beauty of democracy,” he added. The NPP maintains that the demonstration is to defend civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability.
