Te Ara Tupua is a great scenic ride, but it doesn’t have anything like the magic or potential tranquility of the Mātai Moana road that wends it around the uninhabited coves between Shelley Bay and Scorching Bay. Photo from WCCBack in 2011, the then minister of arts, culture and Heritage, Chris Finlayson, announced the establishment of a 76-hectare reserve at Mātai Moana including the land around the old Mt Crawford prison. It’d be dirt cheap and free Mātai Moana – the jewel in the crown of Whanganui-a-Tara’s coast-line – to be what it should be: a place for leisurely enjoyment with priority given to those on foot and bike.
