Air India named former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as CEO on Wednesday, bringing in an industry veteran to drive its turnaround amid mounting regulatory scrutiny following last year's deadly crash. Gebremariam transformed Ethiopian Airlines into Africa's largest carrier and guided it through two major crises: the COVID-19 pandemic without ‌government aid and the fatal 2019 Boeing 737 MAX crash. Wilson resigned in April, nearly a year after the fatal crash, as Air India continued to post losses. Singapore Airlines owns about 25% of Air India, with Tata Sons holding the rest. In ‌Air India's annual report released last week, he said the airline's turnaround could take up to a decade, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing its new CEO.
