New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has managed to turn a socialist grocery experiment into an even bigger invitation for abuse. The plan involves taxpayer-financed grocery stores, one in each borough, selling food at discounts around 30 percent. Mamdani then rushed to assure the progressive faithful that nobody would be asked for identification at his city-run grocery stores. The message was clear: if you can walk through the door, you can enjoy the discount while New York taxpayers pick up the tab. At our five-borough municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, fresh produce and other everyday essentials.
