The United Nations Country Team in South Sudan has welcomed the inscription of the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking the country’s first World Heritage Site.
The Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape spans more than 37,500 square kilometres, encompassing Boma and Badingilo national parks, surrounding savannahs, wetlands and wildlife corridors.
The UN said the recognition follows years of collaboration between the Government of South Sudan, UNESCO, conservation partners and local communities to prepare the nomination under the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
The World Heritage Committee also placed the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger, citing challenges including insecurity, commercial poaching and climate shocks.
The UN said the designation strengthens international cooperation to protect South Sudan’s rich natural heritage while showcasing one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife landscapes to the world.
