Veteran broadcaster, journalist and Māori leader Derek Fox says the challenges facing Māori have never been greater, making it more important than ever for eligible voters to enrol and make their voices heard at this year’s general election. Fox encouraged Māori, particularly rangatahi and first-time voters, to ensure they are enrolled and ready to cast their ballots. He said every vote contributes to shaping the future of policies affecting education, health, employment, housing and Māori development. The former Māori Party president and longtime commentator said Māori have fought hard for political representation and should never take the right to vote for granted. As political debate intensifies ahead of polling day, Fox believes Māori voters have the opportunity to influence decisions on issues that directly affect their communities.
