On Wednesday evening though, the building sustained a partial collapse that left a gaping hole on the back third floor.
Streets surrounding the building are closed indefinitely:• Corbet Street, from East Fourth Avenue to East Sixth Avenue;• East Fifth Avenue, from Corbet Street to Hickory Way;• East Fourth Avenue, from Corbet Street to Hickory Way.
Built in 1883 by Jacob Oppenheimer, the opera house served many purposes over the years but was often at the heart of the Tarentum community, said Cindy Homburg, Tarentum historian and president of The Tarentum Book Club.
Borough police, public works, fire and EMS responded to a call for a building collapse shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Emergency responders had the 300 blocks of East Fourth and Fifth avenues blocked off as well as the 400 block of Corbet Street.
