Aden — The European Union has announced a new humanitarian grant to provide legal protection for thousands of refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said Tuesday.
Specialized services will include child protection, prevention of gender-based violence, early identification of vulnerable individuals, safe referrals, and survivor-centered support.
According to UN estimates, Yemen currently hosts more than 64,000 refugees and asylum seekers, primarily from Somalia, Ethiopia, Syria, Eritrea, Iraq, and Sudan.
The ongoing conflict and economic crisis have deprived many of them of legal documentation and access to basic services, heightening their vulnerability.
UNHCR emphasized that the EU’s support is vital to sustaining protection programs at a time when refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen face mounting challenges amid protracted conflict and humanitarian strain.
