Most of the country believes the monthslong war between the United States and Iran has failed to achieve its goals and views it as an unsustainable attrition, according to a new poll. A Marquette Law School Supreme Court poll conducted at the end of July found that 88% of respondents said the U.S. has “not achieved its goals” compared to 12% who said the war has been a success. Additionally, 75% said the war has not been “worth the cost,” and 25% said it has been an effort well spent. Throughout the war, which recently hit the five-month mark, President Donald Trump has repeatedly said the ultimate goal was to ensure Tehran would never obtain a nuclear weapon. The Trump administration has offered what critics have called contradictory status updates about Iran’s military capabilities, as well as the state of its nuclear program.
