Firefighters who spent the 2025/26 fire season battling wildfires across the Western Cape have been recognised for their efforts after a season marked by extreme conditions, challenging terrain and extensive damage, Cape {town} Etc reports. A season of intense firefightingThe 2025/26 fire season brought a significant increase in wildfire activity across the province. While the fire season generally runs from October to April, the season got off to an early start, with 35 fires recorded during spring. Western Cape Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell recognised the firefighters and their families for the sacrifices involved in the work. The event also connected the work of CapeNature’s Field Rangers and firefighters with two international recognition days.
