Hyderabad: Widespread ignorance of early leg pain and poor blood circulation leads to nearly one lakh preventable limb amputations in India every year, according to leading medical experts said on National Vascular Day observed on August 6.
Leg pain can mean blocked/narrowed arteriesDr PC Gupta, Clinical Director and Head of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, noted that leg pain while walking is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed as a routine sign of ageing, joint trouble or muscle fatigue.
It is not just about an ageing leg“One of the biggest misconceptions is that leg pain while walking is simply due to ageing,” Dr Gupta said.
According to clinical estimates:- 1 in 4 individuals with diabetes is likely to develop a foot ulcer during their lifetime.
- Blocked leg arteries also correlate with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke; early vascular intervention often protects both limbs and overall cardiovascular health.
