These hypothetical portals have been a longtime fascination of Jeff Mills since the legend was making timeless electronic music as part of the pioneering Detroit techno collective Underground Resistance. Interdimensional travel is also the focus of his new live project, Stargate, premiering at MUTEK this month. For Mills, techno, space science, and science fiction are perpetually in conversation, beacons of freedom for a downtrodden society struggling against economic inequality, political disorder, and climate crisis. Mills’ Stargate debut at MUTEK will feature a stargate of his own, with audio-visual elements providing an immersive intergalactic experience for viewers. I think this is one of the last ideas that I had while I was in Underground Resistance.
