Formed in 2001 in New South Wales, Australia, the large male voice choir was the brainchild of its director, “Spookmeister” Stephen Tabener. Inspired by listening to Georgian choirs, Tabener created something unique: a contemporary male voice choir that performs acappella pieces with intricate harmonies that can bring a tear to your eye and a gulp to your throat. This year the Spookys are celebrating their 25th anniversary, so it was only natural that the audience should sing them “Happy Birthday”. From there it was a non-stop run of Spooky splendour, starting with the explanatory “The Spooky Theme”, and continuing with the choir’s manifesto “We’ll Give It a Go”. A likable trio, comprising Rosie Hodgson (vocals), Rowan Piggott (fiddle, vocals) and Philippe Barnes (acoustic guitar, vocals), their close harmonies were truly top-notch.
