Ray Jarvis, a standout wide receiver at Norfolk State who went on to play nine seasons in the NFL, died Aug. 3 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Jarvis led the Lions in receiving in 1975 (29 receptions, 501 yards, four touchdowns) and 1976 (39 receptions, 822 yards, five TDs). Jarvis' career blossomed in Detroit after he joined the Lions at end of their 1974 training camp. Norfolk State formally recognized Jarvis' contributions in 2023, when he was inducted into the university's Athletics Hall of Fame. The school cited both his record-setting production with the Spartans and his nine-year NFL career in honoring one of the program's most accomplished receivers.
