Senators Call for Crackdown on Prediction Markets Allowing Wildfire Bets
['About Our Expert']

Prediction markets have made it possible to wager on almost any future event, including election results and Elon Musk’s tweet frequency, but not every bet is well-received.
A group of US senators, led by Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), wrote to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) demanding action against prediction markets that let users bet on wildfires.
“Offering bets on destructive wildfires threatens to minimize communities’ suffering, all so the rich and powerful can profit,” the senators write.
The senators further claim that the CTFC shouldn’t allow prediction markets to “offer unrestricted betting on wildfires” and urge the agency to introduce “common-sense guardrails” to prevent people from profiting from such disasters.
Kalshi told Ars Technica that it doesn’t allow wildfire bets as they create “perverse incentives.”
