The Federal Government has ordered the immediate implementation of measures to protect health workers across the country following a series of reported assaults, intimidation and harassment in federal health institutions. The committee documented 18 incidents of assault, intimidation or harassment in federal tertiary health institutions within the past year involving patients, relatives, members of the public and security personnel. “Health workers dedicate their lives to caring for Nigerians and must be able to carry out their duties in an environment that is safe, secure and free from violence, intimidation or harassment,” Pate said. The Ministry of Health said broader policy recommendations from the committee would be presented to the National Council on Health for consideration as a national framework applicable to federal, state and private health institutions.
