WALKER COUNTY, GA. (WDEF) — Wednesday marked the first day of school in Walker County, Georgia. Children filed into the classroom, met new teachers, and got accustomed to their new grades. Walker County is limiting access to personal electronic devices like phones in accordance with Georgia law, but they are also teaching kids how to effectively and safely use new tools like AI. Damon Raines Superintendent of Walker County Schools told us, “That teacher is more engaging sometimes than AI and so we want to make sure that when they come in, we’re forming those relationships with kids that’s the foundational component of a good classroom teachers, knowing how to form those relationships and then you begin to introduce them to the content to the standards and then you offer them options to finding information.” Superintendent Raines tells us that instead of rejecting AI entirely, they’re working with some AI tools without sacrificing the human element of teaching.
