High school campus in Richmond shuts down over discovery of toxic chemicals

News – NBC Bay Area
The West Contra Costa Unified School District shut down the Kennedy High School campus this week over the discovery of toxic chemicals underneath the campus, just less than two weeks before classes begin.
Kennedy High School was already one of four high schools undergoing upgrades ahead of the new school year.
On Friday, July 31, the WCCUSD Executive Team received preliminary results from this testing, which showed varying levels of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) underground below the Kennedy High School campus.
As the school year begins on August 18, the District is exploring options for temporarily relocating the Kennedy High School community in support of a safe and healthy start to the school year.
Public safety is our top priority, and additional testing is being done to evaluate any safety concerns in the buildings at Kennedy High School.
